A while ago, my brother and I thought we would create a political party for independants like us, and we would call it the Be Reasonable Party. The basic idea would be that the party wouldn't have so much a platform, but instead all members would just abide by one basic principle: Just be reasonable. Everyone would be entitled to their different opinions and respected for having them. Instead of centering on the issues we most heavily believe in, we would just concentrate on passing good legislation that provides the maximum positive effect for the maximum number of Americans. Very simple, just that.
Now, the dynamics of such a party are impossible, naturally. While in theory it's sure nice, people doing the things they have to do to improve the lot of their fellow Americans, the truth is that what's reasonable to sum is unreasonable to others.
I guess that's a shame. Humans seem to me to be incapable for the most part of objectively looking at every issue. We're all too easily offended, or too easily riled up, or are far to committed to a specific opinion on an issue that is based way too much on how we feel about it. I don't care how you feel, I care that you did all you did to divorce your feelings from the final decision based off the most objective facts.
I call this a pipe dream.
Sorry for the mini-rant.
