A Limit of Wisdom

I've often wondered, and believe me I know this is random, if there is a cap to human understanding? Can we advance so far on a topic that one life time is no longer enough to further the subject?

The first thing that comes to my mind is physics. I personally believe that we've only unlocked the first level of encryption on how the hell this world of our world works. Could it be so complex that if I devoted my whole life learning what's already discovered, I'd never have enough time to try and discover something new?

I just find that to be a really intriguing thought. Don't really know why.
